Make your whole house smell great for a few pennies

Candles and oil diffusers do a good job of covering a limited area with your scent of choice, but there is a more effective solution that can leave your entire house smelling fantastic. Best of all, it’s super cheap and will cost only a few cents.

The trick is to sprinkle some essential oil on your furnace filter. Since the air that is passed through the filter comes out of all the vents in your home, it will carry that scent to every room. A 0.5-ounce (15ml) bottle of essential oil can be purchased for about $6 at stores like Walmart. One application will last at least a day or two, so a single bottle should be enough for a whole month.

There is one important caveat, however. If you have pets there are many essential oils that may be harmful to them, especially if they are confined to a small area. FoundAnimals.org has a good list of oils that can be toxic to dogs and cats, but you should always check with your veterinarian before using essential oils around your pets.
